The Mexican Embassy invites our members to celebrate and learn about the “Day of the Dead” (Día de los Muertos). This event is celebrated in Mexico between October 31st and November 2nd. The celebration is a melting pot of ingredients from pre-Hispanic to contemporary elements, rural to urban, reverential to iconoclastic and from deeply religious to the pagan. It represents death with humor and at the same time with solemnity.
On this holiday, people remember and honor their deceased loved ones. However, It's not a gloomy or morbid occasion, rather a festive and colorful holiday celebrating the lives of those who have passed on. The Day of the Dead altars make the souls feel welcomed and show them they have not been forgotten with offerings that include components evoking the four elements: water, earth, wind and fire.
Come and learn unique traditions and discover many colorful Mexican folk art elements. You will also be able to enjoy the traditional dead bread and hot chocolate with catrinas.
Time: Friday 4th of November at 10:30am to 12:00
Place: Cervantes Institute, Čika-Ljubina 19

Social Work Activity Group: Christmas Gifts
To put a smile on children's faces - that is what we would like to realize with our first project. We would like to give the children of Svratište drop-in shelter a little bit of joy for Christmas. Drop-in shelter beneficiaries are children between 5 and 15 years of age, who live or work on the streets of Belgrade and who are exposed to numerous risks due to their circumstances.
For this purpose, at the upcoming Coffee Morning, a Christmas tree will be set up with wish lists, from which anyone who would like to contribute to our project can take one or more cards. The cards will describe what the gift should look like and how you can return it. We look forward to your contribution to our Christmas campaign!
If you are interested in joining our group, please contact Katarina (kattarina1@gmail.com).
Information about Svratište can be found here: https://cim.org.rs/programs/?lang=en#svratiste

Ongoing Activity: Book Club
29.11.2022 at 11:00 | SKC Bookstore | Kralja Milana 48
The members of the IWC Book Club meet on a regular basis every month to discuss the book chosen and exchange ideas and insights. All IWC members are welcome to join single meetings related to a particular book they find interesting as well. Please contact the coordinator Sabine Keiser, at sabskeis7@gmail.com for more information on future books and meetings.
The next meeting will take place on November 29th at 11:00 at SKC Bookstore and the book to be discussed is: “A Guide to Serbian Mentality” by Momo Kapor. Belgrade author and painter Momo Kapor has spent many years studying the mentality of his countrymen. The fruit of this literary research is this book: This book's readers will learn, through a self-ironic and humorous tone, what Serbs like and dislike, whom they admire and despise, what they eat and what they drink, how they spend their free time, what they dream about and what they believe; in a word, the book is about what constitutes a Serb from the inside! This book is available in all major bookstores.
In December the book club will not be meeting as it coincides with the holidays and instead shall meet on January 31st at 11:00 to discuss the book “The Island of Missing Trees” by Elif Shafak. This book might be a bit difficult to find, so begin your search pretty soon!
Time: Tuesday November 29th at 11:00
